Alas I have missed the spectacle of the British male (and female!!) No doubt they will re-appear later on in in the year. I wear cropped trousers without socks all through the summer. Has anyone noticed the French attire during the summer and winter - its really amazing!

Bonjour Steve,
It might help your critical comment- you have a real case- if you got LE in front of Gambetta! He was after all a prominent revolutionary in French history.
As you do, I feel sad and cringe when I see less than exemplary fellow country men and women give a poor image " abroad". However I wish it was only socks with sandals which bothered me. Alas! there is so much more. Could one hear of heartwarming stories to redress the balance?

I love Eymet outside July and August when it is totally spoilt by invading British tourists, who apart from being sartorially challenged by wearing socks with sandals etc, seem to insist on being loud, regularly make no attempt to speak the local lingo, barge around (particularly during the night market) when the local inhabitants (both French and English) show the usual degrees of courtesy and far worse in my opinion that sock wearing, display ugly and vulgar tatoos.
Duras is starting to suffer in the same way, but I was pleased when a couple of football supporters in the local cafe were asked to put their shirts back on. A local lady then informed them that this was not Southern Spain! They left shortly afterwards, hopefully never to be seen again.
I believe there is a simple maxim in life, 'when in Rome ........' and foreigners should always respect local culture and customs.

I totally agree with you when in rome do as the romans do. It's there country there rules, so abide by them SHAME it's not the same in england.
As for steven's 2010 spot the foreigner all my drivers call them shed shifters and if we could have one new rule It would be that there only allowed on the road from 20:00 hrs to 08:00 hrs.
Back to Levignac three weeks to day just teaching wife how to use machine gun to blow out tyres on shed shifters as we pass(only kidding).

kdutty,
I beg to differ. I was present during this incident and I was most disappointed as I thought the two girls looked quite lovely with their shirts off.
